So unless you can find a USB Thumb Drive that has high end read/write rates then you will experience slowness and at times latency due to is architecture when comparing to the internal drive or external FireWire drive. When I travel I use this for security needs where I cannot store sensitive information on the internal drive and do not use this one as much as the others that I have on the internal drive and external FireWire drives. So although they (thumb drives) worked they were very slow in comparison. I have a Virtual Machine that run from a Kingston CompactFlash Ultimate 266X which has a 45MB/sec read, 40MB/sec write rate and I use this in a USB CompactFlash Drive and it was the smallest and fastest device I could find at the time I set it up and my USB Thumb Drives where around half that throughput.
